📅 Thursday, May 9, at 6:00 PM

🗣️ Language of the conversation: Latvian.

‘The poster is a sharp, journalistic weapon in the hands of a skillful artist,’ wrote director Ansis Epners. In the space of Latvian art, poster art experienced its most vibrant period in the 1970s and 1980s, when posters not only served the function of informative communication or conveying a social message but were also valuable artworks in their own right and vivid examples of graphic design. The poster not only served as a comprehensible, agitating, and often propagandistic guide in the realm of mass media but also became an experimental space for the artistic expression of poster artists’ freedom.

Today, the breath of the era is documented by banners and digitally viewable materials that essentially fulfill the function of posters. However, the media and means of expression are different, and so is the generation that carries and receives information. What made Soviet-era posters not only effective media but also valuable works of art? Are there echoes of the golden age of poster art in today’s graphic language? With what techniques does advertising today emerge and fill its space of free expression, attracting audiences?

These and other questions will be discussed by three well-known poster artists – Juris Dimiters, Laimonis Šēnbergs, and Visvaldis Asaris – as well as graphic designers Aleksejs Muraško and Valters Kalsers. The conversation will be moderated by art historian Ramona Umblija.

The live stream of the conversation will also be available on the Zuzeum Facebook account.
