ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition presents more than 350 works created by Latvian artists under Soviet occupation from the Zuzāns Collection, Latvian National Museum of Art and private collections as well as materials from the Latvian State Archive of Audiovisual Documents.

During the tour, Sandra Krastiņa will introduce the concept of the exhibition and delve into both the art created during the Soviet occupation years and the overall context of that time, highlighting the significance of Soviet-era art and its role today. Sandra Krastiņa is not only the curator of the exhibition ‘Where to Hide!’ but also an artist who herself created artworks during the Soviet occupation and experienced firsthand how, alongside themes co-opted by the authorities, artists endeavored to express themselves freely. This allowed the exhibition to be shaped as an authentic testimony of the era, where the author.

ABOUT “Dzeltenie Pastnieki”

“Dzeltenie Pastnieki” is a Latvian music group formed in 1979, considered one of the pioneers of new wave and reggae in Latvia and the former Soviet Union. With their initially new wave-styled music, “Dzeltenie Pastnieki,” whose members were mostly self-taught in music, achieved an independent, uniquely original musical expression not only within the context of Latvia but also distinguished by a singular, unreproducible sound and song themes. Their approach was fundamentally non-commercial and apolitical, reflecting facets of human existence and aspects of relationships, rather than specific social or historical situations of their time of creation. This aligns with the ensemble’s policy—to operate without the mandatory “patrons” within the Soviet system in the 1980s—entities that would provide the material and technical base, which was also a reason for the absence of concert activities.

Although “Dzeltenie Pastnieki” had already become a cult group in Latvia at the outset, by 1987 the group almost never performed live. Their recordings circulated primarily through “self-flow,” with enthusiasts transcribing them from one another using tape and cassette recorders. Official releases of all the band’s classic albums only occurred after the band’s leader, Ingus Baušķenieks, founded his own music record label.

The public performance of “Dzeltenie Pastnieki” became possible only when the policy of “restructuring” was announced in the Soviet Union in the second half of the 1980s, and control over the cultural sector relaxed. In 1986, they participated in the “Bildes” festival, while in 1987 they took to the stage at the “Liepājas Dzintars” festival.
