Zuzeum is pleased to invite you to an artist talk with world-renowned photojournalist Sergey Maximishin (1964, Kodima, Ukraine). This talk is part of a series of meetings with global art professionals. These talks and lecture series hosted by Zuzeum Art Centre aims to bring exceptional art professionals to Riga to exchange experiences and essential ideas, fostering new thinking and cultural dialogue.
During the talk at Zuzeum, Sergey Maximishin will share his experience working with magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Geo, Paris Match, and Stern. His photography focuses on social themes and captures the daily life of people living in different parts of the world. The two-time World Press Photo award winner will talk about his experiences in Iran, Iraq, North Korea, India, Brazil, Mongolia, Russia, and other countries. Maximishin will showcase the best of his photo stories and answer questions from the audience.
Sergey Maximishin was born in 1964 in the village of Kodima, near Odessa, and spent his childhood in Kerch, Crimea. In 1982, he moved to Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). From 1985 to 1987, he spent time in Cuba, serving in the Soviet army as a photographer. In 1991, Maximishin graduated from Leningrad Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor’s degree in physics. He worked in the scientific and technical expertise laboratory of the Hermitage. Since 1999, Maximishin worked as a photojournalist for the newspaper Izvestia, and since 2003, he has worked as a freelance photographer, collaborating with agencies Focus in Germany and Panos Pictures in the UK.
Until 2022, Sergey Maximishin lived in St. Petersburg, but in March 2022, he emigrated to Jerusalem, where he now resides.
Maximishin’s works have been exhibited in solo exhibitions throughout Europe and the USA. His photographs are in various public and private collections, including FNAC (National Contemporary Art Center) in France, the Nicéphore Niépce Museum in France, the International Center for Photojournalism in France, and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts in the USA. Maximishin is the author of the books ‘The Last Empire’, ‘100 Photographs’, and ‘Memory Map’.
