Join us for a public talk with Dutch interdisciplinary artist and choreographer Edd Schouten. As co-director and curator at TUR—space for contemporary art—Schouten uses his experience to work with artists to create original exhibitions within the unique space of TUR. Schouten will share his journey to Riga and insights into his approach to working with artists and navigating the challenges of running an art space that produces quality art shows. This talk is designed to encourage students, artists, and anyone interested in creative practices.
Today, contemporary art and artists often find their homes in independent, industrial spaces, working outside the traditional gallery system and frequently without substantial budgets. This approach has become vital to the creative process, allowing artists to experiment and develop new ideas in a more flexible environment. Spaces like Berlin’s Holzmarkt and the art scene in Detroit have become renowned for fostering this kind of independent, resourceful spirit. These spaces thrive on collaboration, adaptability, and community engagement, proving that working outside conventional frameworks can lead to innovative and impactful art practices. Understanding this aspect of the art world can offer fresh perspectives on the possibilities for creativity and growth in challenging conditions.
TUR is a space dedicated to programming three contemporary art exhibitions in the winter, three in the summer, and one in the fall. Located in the heart of Tallinas iela kvartāls, TUR offers a dynamic presentation space that changes character with the seasons, creating opportunities for distinct exhibitions. With a solid commitment for Riga’s contemporary art scene, TUR collaborates closely with artists, inviting them to experiment and create new work beyond their usual practice. TUR aims to engage a wider audience beyond traditional art circles, providing a space for discussions, workshops, and creative exchange. They also strive to elevate Latvian contemporary art internationally by connecting their artists with platforms and institutions outside of Latvia.
