🎙️ Zuzeum invites you to a public talk by artist Maryna Tomaszewska (Warsaw, Poland), who will explore the complexities of Central and Eastern Europe through the lens of her artistic practice.

📅 Wednesday, 16 April 2025, 6:00 PM
🎟 Free admission with prior registration
🗣 The talk will be held in English

Drawing from personal history and lived experience, Tomaszewska will reflect on growing up in Warsaw in the 1980s in a politically engaged, opposition family, navigating the post-Soviet landscape, and how these formative experiences continue to shape her work today.

This event is part of a series of public talks with international art professionals, initiated by Zuzeum in collaboration with MA POST. The series brings leading voices in contemporary art to Riga to foster exchange, dialogue, and new ways of thinking.

Poland—with its contrasting influences that make it eclectic, beautiful and brutal, sophisticated and saturated with socialist realism, religious and secular—forms the backdrop to Tomaszewska’s work. She translates this cultural landscape into a visual language shaped by post-internet aesthetics, irony, humor, feminism, death, pop culture, and mainstream media.

Maryna Tomaszewska is an interdisciplinary artist who works with objects, installations, performances, and artist books. She is the editor-in-chief of The Worst Magazine Ever and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where she leads the Experimental Text Studio at the Faculty of Media Art. Her practice combines art and education, encouraging critical reflection and experimentation.

Tomaszewska’s work focuses on themes such as text as art, power structures, feminism, and death. Her projects have been presented at institutions including BWA Wrocław, BWA Zielona Góra, CCA Ujazdowski Castle, Stroboscope, MATCA (Cluj-Napoca), OOF Gallery (London), Golden Thread Gallery (Belfast), and Villa Tokyo. She has also participated in major art book fairs, including the NY Art Book Fair (MoMA PS1) and the LA Art Book Fair (MoCA).
