🎉 Our founder Jānis Zuzāns and the Zuzeum team want to congratulate Amanda Ziemele for representing ‘O day and night, but this is wondrous strange… and therefore as a stranger give it welcome’ at the Latvian Pavilion during the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia from April 20 until November 24, 2024.
For several years, J. Zuzāns has been supporting and sponsoring Latvian projects at La Biennale di Venezia, and this year is no different. We are proud of this involvement and wish Amanda all the success!
📖 An underlying yet integral narrative of Amanda’s project for the Latvian Pavilion, from which its ideas and concepts germinate, is English schoolmaster and theologian Edwin A. Abbott’s novella ‘Flatland’. Following Abbott’s Shakespearian thread: ‘O day and night, but this is wondrous strange… and therefore as a stranger give it welcome’, Ziemele unfolds the mysteries of three dimensions in a fluid transition from flatland to thoughtland by creating a microcosm of embrace and unconditional hospitality under threat, consisting of eight figures of heightened identity and monochromatic (sur)faces.
🔗 The Pavilion is curated by Adam Budak, the Director of Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover, and is commissioned by Daiga Rudzāte, the Head of the INDIE Culture Project Agency.
