🎨 Art enthusiasts and culture lovers in Berlin have the opportunity to meet Latvian art – the prestigious Haus der Kulturen der Welt or “House of World Cultures” has opened the exhibition “As Though We Hid the Sun in a Sea of Stories”, featuring four paintings by Latvian artist Ausekļis Baušķenieks from the Zuzāns collection, on view until 14 January 2024.

🧑🏼‍🎨 Auseklis Baušķenieks (1910-2007) stands out in the Latvian art scene for his unique way of expression. The artist created his paintings as contemporary notes, with surreal insertions and absurd situations placing a man of his time at the centre. One of the few who dared to bring irony and satire into the art of walking, making us smile involuntarily at everyday life, as well as at socio-economic or political developments.

Haus der Kulturen der Welt is known as a space where international art is exhibited. This exhibition and research project weaves together and continues to add to the stories of artists, curators, writers and specialists in local traditions, revealing different worlds that exist in parallel.

🖼️ Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin is an international centre for contemporary art and a forum for current events and discussions. It exhibits artworks from all over the world, with a special focus on cultures and societies outside Europe. Haus der Kulturen der Welt offers an interdisciplinary multimedia programme, unique in Europe, which is characterised by the interaction of visual arts, music, literature, performing arts, film, academic debate and digital media.

About Zuzāns Collection:

The collection includes more than 30 000 objects of painting, graphic art, sculpture, decorative and applied art and design, and is the largest private collection of Latvian art in the world. The collection covers art created from the late 19th century to the present day (including works from the classical modernist and Soviet periods). The collection includes both artists recognised in Latvian art history and lesser-known representatives of non-conformism, whose work is not widely represented in Latvian state art institutions. The addition of contemporary paintings and sculptures of international significance marks a new direction in the development of the collection.
