Zuzeum
is already happening

The curious team of Zuzeum 101 visited Kim? Contemporary Art Centre for a talk with Katrīna Neiburga about her art show on hair. Zuzeum 101 is the youth program of Zuzeum Art Centre. The theme of the second year is how an idea turns into an exhibition.

Meet Leo the fox, the trustful friend of the Zuzeum Kids program. Inspired by Leo Kokle's painting 'Child's World (Aija Upīte)', it was created by illustrator Līga Kitchen. The yellow fox usually standing on a shelf in the artist's studio is the accent of a happy childhood chosen by Leo Kokle himself. Zuzeum x Pikolo art workshop for kids #2 takes place on Sat Jun 8 at 11AM. Few tickets available.

@ Zuzeum : The Ear

Whilst the reconstruction project of Zuzeum building remains in progress, the Zuzāns Collection continues to grow. The fantastic and psychedelic motifs of Moscow's conceptualist Pavel Pepperstein are revealed by his ink drawing from the series 'Dreams and Hallucinations' (2001). In Pepperstein’s imaginary universe, one that he brands as 'psychedelic realism', everything is fair game. We aim to show Pepperstein's works to a greater public in an exhibition soon.

I CRY AT MUSEUMS is a zine exploring different angles of art made by the team Zuzeum 101. The publication is available for purchase at Zuzeum : The Ear, Lāčplēša 101, 3rd Floor. Language: Latvian. The first edition of the program, titled How to Write a Painting, was launched in April 2018 and took place in collaboration with the editors of the bilingual bookazine Benji Knewman. Zuzeum 101 second edition launches in May 2019.

Artworks from the Zuzāns Collection are often loaned to museums in Latvia and abroad. Currently 'Vacationers' (1987) by Semyon Faibisovich is exhibited at The State Tretyakov Gallery at Krymsky Val in Moscow. 'Obviousness. Retrospective of Semyon Faibisovich' shows for the first time the entire creative evolution of one of the most iconic painters of modern Russia. On view till July 28.

On April 23, 6PM we launch the Zuzeum 101 magazine titled 'I Cry in Museums'. Zuzeum 101 is the youth program of the forthcoming Zuzeum Art Centre. Whilst the reconstruction project of Zuzeum building remains in progress, the Zuzāns Collection continues to grow. True gem in our Sots Art section is 'Maria Maksimovna, your tea kettle is boiling' (1992) by Viktor Pivovarov, one of the leading artists of the Moscow Conceptualist movement. Part of the series 'Flat No.22', this work reflects the ideologization of the Soviet lifestyle, simultaneously expressing criticism and nostalgia for it. Pivovarov himself grew up in a small room of a communal apartment. We hope to show this painting to a greater public in an exhibition soon.

In other news: reporting from Zaiga Gaile bureau with architect herself presenting the brand new and beautifully detailed Zuzeum Art Centre architectural mockup. Building permit in the process.

From 31 January to 30 March 2019, the Mūkusala Art Salon hosts the exhibition from the Zuzāns Collection 'Fear Not'. The works of painting, graphic art, sculpture and applied art shown in the exhibition were made over the period from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to nowadays. Staying away from seriousness yet without promising entertaining jokes, they create an environment that highlights uncanny tendencies. Free admission.

The winner of the Purvītis Prize 2019 will be announced on April 12, 2019, in a special ceremony at the Zuzeum Art Centre. As usual, the winner of the prize will be chosen by an international jury. Purvītis Prize was founded by Jānis Zuzāns and the Latvian National Museum of Art in 2008. It is the most prestigious award in Latvian art.

Whilst the reconstruction project of Zuzeum building remains in progress, the Zuzāns Collection continues to grow. One of the recent acquisitions and the personal highlight for collector Jānis Zuzāns in 2018 is 'The Little Water Spirit' by Ilya Kabakov (1980, 260x190 cm). Disguised as an illustration for a fairy tale, in fact it's a protest against the society a la Kabakov. We hope to show it to a greater public in an upcoming exhibition.

We offer gifts for those who make and love art. Candles, book 'The Zuzāns Collection' in both Latvian and English, sweaters, pins, bracelets and more. Drop by at Lāčplēša 101, 3rd Floor. We accept bank cards. Free parking.

Team Z101 has started working on their own printed publication on art due in spring 2019. We found a rare moment of rest to gather at Zuzeum : The Ear for a presentation from one of our own, Alise Pabērza, on the topic of making mistakes. Because, as history shows, fuckups make innovations.
