These phrases may sound contradictory, but marrying “craft” to “cool” has become commonplace in the last decade, as once-dowdy domestic hobbies have metamorphosed into trendy pastimes for the creative set. (Think knitting-focused Instagram accounts that draw hundreds of thousands of followers, and viral articles featuring knitted pyjamas for chilly elephants.) In this atmosphere, the art world, too, has seen an uptick in the use of knitting and crocheting as a medium. But this is by no means a new phenomenon among artists. In this workshop we will look into the history of this art form, discover how creatives of today use knitting as a form of empowerment and get hands-on experience in this practice.

Get your needles out, but if you don’t know how to, in this workshop series we will teach you. In September and October we will learn different crochet patterns, from simple patterns to more complex crochet.

Entrance fee is EUR 5 with prior registration. We will provide all materials (yarns and needles), but feel free to bring your own materials!

My aunt taught me to crochet a long time ago – in elementary school. As a child, I used to crochet doll clothes out of colourful plastic bags. In high school I got more into knitting. Crochet is enjoying a renaissance – beach bags, swimwear or even summer dresses, you can crochet anything!
